Boulders beach, known by some as the place where the penguins can be found is home to a remarkable colony of African penguins. Just over an hour’s drive from Cape Town, out towards cape point this amazing place and a one of the best known tours in the Cape, is somewhere locals and visitors flock to.

Known as “Jackass” Penguins, the cute and noisy seabirds settled at Boulders Beach around 1982. The colony started with just a couple of breeding pairs and grew by a staggering 300 percent over the next 20 years or  so. Currently there are just over 2,000 penguins that litter the coast and these have become one of the top tourist attractions in the Cape. This is one of the tours  considered to be day out one that is a “must do” when in Cape Town.

It is best to make as much of a full day as possible for this tour to see the famous penguins. It takes an hour or so to get to Boulders from Cape Town, depending on the route you may stop along the way for some photo opportunities or maybe a good cup of coffee. This is one of those Cape Town tours that really must be taken slowly and at leisure to enjoy.

On arrival at Boulders there is an interesting information centre. If you have kids with you on this amazing tour this is well worth calling into. Finding out a little more about the penguins will make the tour even more a treat for the kids.

In the distance you will hear what sound like donkeys, a braying noise and it won’t be long before you realise this is the sound of the penguins.  As you near the sandy and rocky beach (the name Boulders is quite apt) penguins will soon be seen among the dunes and your eyes will pop open. 

The Penguins at Boulders is one of the most well planned tours that needs no guide you will come across. A wooden walkway has been set up along the beach and through the dunes  and while kids run on happily ahead you can take your time.
